And once the drinking cup is full, the weight of the water will overcome the spring tension sealing it shut. An internal spring opens an internal valve when the drinking cup is empty, allowing water to flow in. Little Giants use a similar system as a bell waters to control their flow of water. They are inexpensive and can feed a lot of chicks – anything up to 200 per feeder. The design has been used for over 60 years in poultry watering, and it’s widely used by the large-scale poultry farms. The Little Giant automatic chicken drinker is commonly available in the USA. The dome feeders are great if you’re keeping chickens in mobile setups, like chicken tractors, or mobile coops. I’m a big fan of these types of automatic water feeders, I use several on my farm. Keeping the valve clean will prolong the life of your feeder(s). If you are using these with rainwater, or another similar water source, make sure to fit a filter to keep crud from getting in the valve. I use these water feeders and usually have to clean the water valve every couple of months. However, bell drinkers need their height adjusting as your birds grow.Įven though the valves can block, they are easy to take apart and clean. Bell drinkers don’t suffer from this the same as they are placed in the air. Raising them of the ground a few inches will help reduce the problem.
